In June 2025, the New York State Supreme Court unveiled one of two courtrooms that were refurbished with technological improvements for visually and hearing-impaired individuals. The project at 60 Centre Street represents a significant step in the Courtroom Modernization Initiative, a statewide effort to increase accessibility through technology. The Center collaborated with advocates from the Center for Independence of the Disabled, the Harlem Alliance of Advocates for the Blind, and the 504 Democratic Club to advise regarding the project, including ensuring that the design plan reflected the needs of the visually and hearing-impaired community. New accommodations include screens for expanded ASL translation and CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) captioning, high-quality microphones, larger monitors and text size, and magnified displays. These improvements will empower individuals with disabilities to serve on juries, streamline courtroom activities, and foster an inclusive environment for court users.
